Welcome to the Malbaie Press website. This is the place to buy the kayaking guidebook Let It Rain: The Whitewater Rivers of New England, New York, and Eastern Canada. You can order the book off the right, by selecting “Add to Cart” and purchasing the book through Paypal.

I would like to impress upon everyone that I only printed 2,000 of these books! And I’ve already sold or donated more than half in the first 1.5 years. In another few years, they will all be gone!

Not to mention that I don’t think there is ANY way I will ever print a second edition. People have sometimes alluded to photos or descriptions I should change in the “next edition,” but that’s not going to happen.

So all I’m saying is: if you want one of these books, but have been putting off getting one because they’re too expensive, or because you don’t have a Paypal account, or something else — just remember — they won’t be around forever . . .

Well, well, well. Jackpot! It’s fascinating what one can find on the USACK website. Notice how in this picture the US whitewater team is pictured with President Bush. Notice how the US’s top slalom kayaker is pictured — appropriately enough — just to Bush’s left! This might or might not be the same kayaker whose boat was adorned with “F.W.” after the ’04 Games. And notice that smile! This is great!

http://www.usack.org/multimedia/photo_gallery/289

Another neat picture I found on the revamped USACK site. You know how they talk about “putting your head down and going to work”? Looks like that’s what I was up to. To me that gold boat is a thing of beauty:

http://www.usack.org/multimedia/photo_gallery/55?photo=787#gallery-header

And one more – Nate Shils and I racing C-2 at the ’08 Nationals. I love paddling stern because you don’t have to wear a bib. Feels downright casual! “I’m only partially committed to the success of this team, and I’m by no means married to the outcome,” it says. Takes the pressure right off!

That’s right! The Slalom World Cup finally returns to the United States this coming weekend, October 3-5, for the first time since 2001. The American Open takes place at the year-old ASCI artificial whitewater course built atop the Wisp Ski Area in Deep Creek, Maryland. A fake river built on the top of a ski area? That’s right! The whitewater is world-class and the views are stunning. And for competitors — there is even a conveyor belt to take you back to the top of the course while still in your boat! This magnficent course has also hosted the last two National Championships. While I can say from experience that the ASCI course is not as demanding as some in the United States, the surrounding landscape makes it, in my opinion, the best major racing venue on the East Coast. There are even four adjustable “wave shapers” that can modify the river’s features.

The website for the American Open is:

http://americanopen.canoeworldseries.com/en/news

And the big news is that Michal Martikan, the Slovakian who is coming off a Gold Medal in Men’s C-1 slalom at the Beijing Olympics, and who has won three other Olympic medals, will be racing at the American Open. Martikan has long been my hero, and to see him racing back on American soil again will truly be an honor. This race will also feature a number of other paddlers from around the world (including me!) and likely all of the 2008 US Olympic Team.

This should be quite a good time. I can’t wait!

OK, time for some Let It Rain trivia!

How many readers know what the original title of Let It Rain was?

Why did I have to change the title before publication?

Email me your answers for a chance to win a free book! Alden110@gmail.com

Actually, the other day “Let It Rain” came on the radio while I was in the car. I must say, it’s never been my favorite Eric Clapton song. Then again, Cocaine: A Paddler’s Guide probably would have sent mixed signals.

Speaking of titles, I’m making good progress on my second book, which I’m jokingly calling my “DC book.” I’ve been working really hard on it, which has unfortunately meant passing up quite a bit of good boating this fall.

But not everyone has been passing up river trips. Check out Fred Coriell’s recent adventure on the Romaine River in Quebec. Readers may recognize several boaters on this trip pictured frequently in Let It Rain. What a shame to lose such a magnificent river to the demands of hydro power:

http://riversenses.blogspot.com/

Be well, do good work, and run waterfalls . . .

Malbaie Press (that is, I) went on a roadtrip this summer to Idaho and Washington state to do, well – let’s call it “research” for my upcoming novel. Okay, it was a boating trip! But the trip gave me both work time and new material. After much hard work, two days ago (Saturday) I finished the first draft of the novel. It’s about 480 pages right now, double-spaced. It’s loosely about a guy who takes up boating, goes through college and gets into teaching, but then quits and ends up on an epic river trip. Below is a picture of me from my recent trip west, on the White Salmon River in Washington. Thanks to Dustin Lanci for the picture.
